Why might Sympathy not start on my computer?

Sympathy is known to be incompatible with the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature of Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista. If DEP is enabled for all programs and services, Sympathy will not run unless you allow it to.

This issue only affects the minority of computers that can support DEP and have it enabled for all programs. If this is the case, you can turn off DEP for the Sympathy.EXE program (usually located in \Program Files\Crossword Man\Sympathy 3.1) with the help of these instructions:

Change Data Execution Prevention settings

How can I create a cell with more than one letter in?

Select the cell and use the Properties... command on the Cell menu. Click on the Text tab in the Cell Properties dialog. Click in the text box to the right of the Text: label and enter the letters you want to appear in the cell. In the following screen shot, XY has been entered as the text:

Multiple letters in cell

If you know a cell must be filled with something other than one letter, but are not sure of the exact contents, you can enter match-all characters (dots '.') in place of the letters. Then when you enter text into lights crossing the cell, as many letters will be assigned from the light text as there are dots in the cell.

How do I use a different Internet search engine?

External Lookup supports the Google and OneLook® search engines by default. To add other search engines, use the Edit|External Lookup|Setup... command to open the Lookup Methods dialog; then enter a Name: and Address: for the search engine in an unused row of the Use web search script section.

The Address: setting is just the address used to access the search engine, with {entry} to indicate where the word or phrase should be inserted.
