To start the new crossword, run Sympathy and
click
on
the Standard toolbar (this is a quick way of doing the File|New...
command). The New Crossword Wizard will open, showing the Puzzle
Type pane:

In the first pane of the wizard, you choose the type of puzzle you want to compile. This creates appropriate initial settings for the puzzle type. In this case you are creating a blocked grid puzzle, so select the Blocked puzzle type, as shown above, then click on the Next button to proceed to the Grid pane:

The most common way of starting a new crossword in Sympathy Crossword Publisher is to specify a custom grid configuration (see Module 1 Step 2 for an alternative method using stock grids). Select the Create a custom grid option to do this.
When creating a custom grid, you decide the following:
To create the crossword shown in Step 1, we need a grid with 9 rows and 9 columns. This is one of the standard custom grid sizes that has a special option button, so select the 9 x 9 option.
For the purposes of this example, we will use the All white initial
pattern to start the crossword. This corresponds to the
button to the right of the Starting Pattern: label, so click
on this option button if it isn't already pushed in.
A picture of what the initial grid will look like appears in the Grid preview area, as shown above. When the settings correspond to the image shown above, click on OK and proceed to the next step.
