To start the new crossword, run Sympathy and click
on the
Standard toolbar (this is a quick way of doing the File|New... command).
The New Crossword Wizard will open, showing the Puzzle Type pane:

In the first pane of the wizard, you choose the type of puzzle you want to compile. This creates appropriate initial settings for the puzzle type. In this case we are creating a barred grid puzzle, so select the Barred puzzle type, as shown above, then click on the Next button to proceed to the Grid pane:

In Module 2 Step 2, we created a custom grid starting with a pattern of black and white squares. We will also create a custom grid in this module, but with a barred grid it is easier to start with all squares black. This time we also need a size that isn't available using an option button.
Start by selecting the Create a custom grid option. To create a custom grid with a non-standard size, you need to enter the dimensions using the boxes to the right of the Columns: and Rows: labels. It is slightly quicker to start by choosing a standard size that's close and then adjust the dimensions using the arrow buttons.
We decided to create a grid with 10 columns and 11 rows, so start by selecting the 11x11 option in the Custom grid size section. You should see that 11 is entered into the boxes to the right of Columns: and Rows:. So we now have the correct number of rows, but we need 10 columns instead of 11.
To reduce the number of columns to 10, click on the down arrow alongside the box to the right of Columns: (you can also change the number by clicking into the box and using keyboard editing). The 11x11 option will no longer be shown as selected because the new dimensions don't match any of the standard sizes.
We also decided to start with all squares black. To set this as the intial
pattern, ensure the
button to the right of the Starting Pattern: label is pushed
in. The picture of the intial grid in the Grid preview area should now
be completely black, as shown in the picture above. You can then click on
OK and proceed to the next step.
